Crystal Meth Facts: Worried My Husbands Friend, a Single Father, Is Doing Meth?

Question by Yep Yep: Worried my husbands friend, a single father, is doing meth?
My husband is unsure how to approach this to him…. my husband and his friend work together. For the past couple weeks people have been coming up to my husband asking what is wrong with Jeff. It’s been a while since they have hung out, they only hang out and do family oriented stuff together. Football party at the house, bday parties etc. We both have small kids, my husband and I have a 6yr and 3yr, Jeff is a single father with a 5 year old. He is a good dad, from what I see and his daughter is very sweet and polite.

Jeff has been spending a lot of time at grungy strip clubs(like bad side of town strip clubs) and a co worker that works with them has a drug addict sister that works there and said he was told that Jeff was doing meth with some of the strippers. He has been showing up late to work, his face is really broken out(I’ve never seen him with a pimple). My husband knows he has been acting different but he doesn’t want to acuse him of smoking meth because of hear say…. I don’t see what the big deal is you tell him what you hear and see what he says….. What would you do?? I just can’t even imagine this could be true…. I don’t know anyone who even does drugs, let alone something as serious as crystal meth. I mean it’s a big deal if that is what is going on with him. I don’t know what to do, I certainly don’t want to hang out with him if this is the case…

What are (early) signs of meth use and what should we do to help if he is in fact using?

Here are some signs that a person might be addicted to meth.

Obsessive, fidgety behavior. As a stimulant, meth can cause users to suddenly start exhibiting behavior more commonly associated with people who suffer from OCD (like compulsive hand-washing, cleaning). Sometimes a meth user will repeatedly perform the same task over and over again.

Loquaciousness. A meth user often engages in constant, rambling conversation.

Dilated pupils and rapid, darting eyes.

Frequent sweating. Meth causes a rise in body temperature. In cases of extreme methamphetamine addiction and overdose, body temperature can rise high enough to cause brain damage or even death.

Tooth decay (commonly referred to as “meth mouth”). Meth abuse over a period of time causes nervous tooth grinding, saliva deficiency and extreme lapses in hygiene. The result is dramatic tooth decay.

Skin lesions and frequent sores that take a long time to heal. Not only does meth naturally inhibit the body’s ability to fight off minor infection, but it can also cause meth addicts to nervously pick at their skin until it bleeds. Chronic meth users often suffer from the hallucination that they have insects crawling beneath their flesh.

Weight loss. Tragically, the goal of weight loss has actually motivated people to start using meth. But extended meth use can cause severe and unhealthy weight loss. The drug that many take in order to look more attractive ultimately leads to physical degeneration that is sometimes unbearable to witness.
