Long story but I’ll attempt to simplify. Grandfather served in ww2. Came out as captain. Kept his sidearm and service rifle m1 carbine. Recently passed and to be short my parents sucked and my grandparents raised me. Here’s where it gets tricky. 10 years ago my aunt and her method addict husband pawned most of my grandfathers gun collection for drugs (unbeknownst to him) we are ranchers and live on the property, aunt switched homes with grandparents to get more living space. Grandads office contained a 72 gun safe which was left instead of going through the hassle of moving it. Grandad slowly retired from shooting and planned to pass the guns to grandchildren. Enter crystal meth. Guns got pawned, nobody knew for almost 8 months until oops, grandad needs an old title from the safe and no guns.

Tracked them all down but unable to recover as they were sold legally and not reported stolen till after the fact. Uncle is now serving lengthy jail time.

Of all that was pawned I wanted to recover his colt commander .45. He carried this gun throughout the war and it means the world to me. We found who purchased it from the pawn shop. (A retired deputy sheriff) He declined to sell even when offered 3x market value. Its been 10 years and I am finally of age to per sue reacquisition. Is there any legal way to get it back? I considered purchasing an identical colt and offering a trade.

Unfortunately you live in a capitalist nation-state where people get to trade, and keep what they earn. However, economics tell you that everything has a price and it means that the retired sheriff, merely values the .45 for more than 3 times the market value. It makes sense that you would think that going to court would be cheaper than making a higher bid, but you have that law against you sorry.
