Prescription Drugs a Teen Trend
by dosmosis
There is good news and bad news regarding teens and drugs. The good news is that the former drugs of choice used by our youth such as heroin, cocaine and crystal meth are on the downturn. The bad news is that prescription drug addiction is at an all time high with more teens turning to “legal drugs” than ever before. Checking any drug rehab center, one will see that they are filled with kids who are trying to get free of their prescription drug addiction. Sometimes teens can look in their parent’s medicine cabinet and discover pills that were used for pain medication such as Oxycontin. Unknown to parents, this is a drug of choice amongst teens that now use these legal drugs over street drugs. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 3 million teens have abused prescription drugs. What’s even worse is that 1 in 3 teens believe that using these legal drugs now and then is not even an issue. Compounding these statistics is the fact that each and every day, 2,700 teens begin to abuse prescription drugs for the first time according to SAMHSA. According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America tracking study, 80% of teens that abuse these drugs get them from relatives or friends. Some will steal them from their own homes while others buy them on the street where they are very assessable. Unfortunately, many end up in a drug rehab center because, although these drugs are legal, they are highly addictive and many teens end up with a prescription drug addiction. Some of the problem is that we pop pills in front of our children without giving it a second thought. Pills become the answer to a headache, stomach problem, depression and on and on. And not that there is anything wrong with having legitimate reasons for taking medicine, but we have to be aware of the message we are sending our children; that pills cure all ills. Many of the teens that end up with prescription drug addiction, first learned about the drug in their own home. Just like drinking an excess of alcohol in front of our kids is not the wisest choice to make, popping pills will have the same affect on them. The only difference is that one will put them into alcohol rehab centers where the other one will land them in a drug rehab center.
