My nephew moved in with us. His parents are recovering crackheads… He is not a bad kid, but he is got a really big head. I guess at home, his parents trying to compensate for their shortcomings filled up his head with the notion that he is a genius… Long story short, the kid likes drugs, anything that can get him high. I am pretty straight (NO DRUGS or alcohol ever!) but at the same time, I pretty open minded. I do not mind him smoking pot, but he seems to smoke all day long from the time he wakes up until very late at night. Is that normal? His parents send him $ 150.00 per week for expenses, but he uses every penny on pot. My husband thinks he is doing as good as expected, considering the kids parents and the fact that he used to drink heavily and take pills, cocaine and crystal meth. I wanna help the kid but I am not too comfortable with his all day pot smoking habit… He goes to work high as hell ( well, he got fired after 2 weeks) and he argues that there is nothing wrong with pot… I tend to agree that pot is not as harmful as the other stuff he was doing, but I still think that all day every day is too much. What do you think? he is only 17 if I kick him out he is going straight to jail, the courts allowed him a reprieve because I agreed to take him in. He is been in trouble with the law since he was 13. His mom and dad do not do crack anymore, but they still drink a lot, smoke pot, take pills and gamble.

Okay, first, I would talk to him, don’t be harsh, have like an open conversation with him so he doesn’t feel like you are the “bad aunt”. Pot isn’t bad to me, but I am liberal as well. I would just explain to him that it is “cool” with you if he smokes, you just do not want to have anything to do with it. Also let him know he needs to have a job or be in school, and not just sit around and smoke all day. Let him know you want him to do something with his life, so if he has to not smoke when he goes to work or whatever, then that is what he needs to do. Some people just smoke all day and act pretty normal because they have a tolerance to it, others do not. But yeah I would just talk to him in a non confronting manner and see whats going on. Maybe then he will be more open to talking to you in the future and will keep out of trouble.
