I Took a Generic Pseudoephendrine – Not Knowing It Was Even Sudafed – and Immediately Noticed My ADD Improved?

Question by Blair: I took a generic pseudoephendrine – not knowing it was even Sudafed – and immediately noticed my ADD improved?
Two years ago I aged out of my parents’ health insurance. I was forced to quit my ADD medication cold turkey. As a result my grades in grad school suffered severely. I never abused my ADD medication, always responded well to it, and I was one of those adults who truly needed it and benefited very much from it. I had a really bad sinus infection the past two weeks so I took Equate Suphedrine. I only took the regular dose (60 mg) and immediately noticed my focus, motivation, concentration, and alertness increase greatly – the same side effects I experienced when I used to take Adderall XR. In fact, it felt exactly like being on Adderall XR. So I googled ‘pseudoephedrine’ and realized it was actually Sudafed aka what they make crystal meth out of. I have year-round terrible, terrible allergies and sinus — which I also used to get Flonase prescription nasal spray for, but since I have no health insurance, can’t afford that either. The Flonase helped my allergies and sinuses tremendously so much that I would never, ever sneeze once, my face pains were gone and I can actually breathe. I reap the same allergies/sinus relief when I take pseudoephedrine.

I’m thinking maybe I can take 60 mg a day, which is the legal amount to buy in Missouri (where I live), this way pseudoephedrine can kill two birds with one stone — for my sinuses/allergies and ADD.

YAY?
Also I take Excedrine for migranes that help me tremendously. Because Excedrine has so much caffeine, is it safe to take Excedrine a few hours after Sudafed? I did it last week and remember when being both on Sudafed and Excedrine, I felt really elated and at peace… kind of like being stimulated, along with the kind of high you would feel from smoking marijuana.

I’ve heard of lots of people (without ADD) taking Sudafed in order to feel super motivated/energetic, much like how those of us with ADD feel on Adderall. The only setback is that the concentration isn’t nearly as intense, and that’s sort of the point of the Addy. It’s probably not too safe to take it long-term just for ADD, but if your doc is okay with you taking it for your allergies on a daly basis, then you’ll get the added bonus of concentration/motivation.
